Pharma Nord Q10 toothpaste?
A pleasant spearmint flavoured toothpaste containing coenzyme Q10, fluoride and sucrose laurate as active ingredients.
What does Q10 toothpaste do?
Q10 is found in the busy tissues in the body. Much is present in the heart and liver, and active muscle. It is also necessary where tissue is renewed frequently as in the intestinal lining, and in the mouth.
It was discovered in 1971 that patients suffering from periodontal disease were deficient in Q10.
Periodontitis starts as an infection at the edge of the gums. The infection then advances down into the narrow pocket between the gum and neck of a tooth. Gradually the attack spreads to the root membrane, cement and bone, eroding these supporting tissues and loosening the tooth to the point at which it may fall out. Loose teeth, bleeding gums and bad breath can all be symptoms of periodontitis.
Studies in America and Japan have shown that progress of the disease can be slowed down or even stopped by Q10.
One classic study was carried out using 120 patients suffering from periodontal disease. Tissue samples were taken from their infected gums and later analysis showed a Q10 deficiency. The patients were then divided into two groups with half given Q10 and half given a placebo. Neither the doctors nor the patients knew who was receiving the Q10. The results were evaluated by measuring the depth of the gingival pockets between teeth and gums. The deeper the pockets, the worse the periodontal disease. The Q10 group were shown to have significantly improved over the placebo group.
It seems likely that Q10 increases the turnover of energy in the gums. Additionally Q10 works as an antioxidant. When bacteria break down the food residue that sticks in between the teeth hydroxyl (nasty) radicals are
released which are capable of destroying the cells of gum tissue. Q10 can neutralise these free radicals.
Benevolent bacteria, naturally present in the mouth are supported by Q10. Some of the undesirable bacteria found in the mouth which are responsible for gum disease rely on vitamin K to make energy. The desirable bacteria typically use coenzyme Q10 during energy production. Thus the use of a toothpaste containing coenzyme Q10 can alter the balance of oral bacteria in favour of desirable bacteria, whilst providing a less favourable environment for bacteria causing gum disease.
Sucrose laurate inhibits the growth of the bacterium Streptococcus mutans, the agent responsible for dental caries.
How often should you use Q10 toothpaste?
Pharma-Nord recommends brushing teeth twice daily with Q10 toothpaste. For maximum benefit, the mouth should not be rinsed after
For periodontal disease consider taking additional Q10 capsules, burst them in the mouth!

Coenzyme Q10 is generally very well tolerated, with no serious adverse effects reported in long term use. There are no known toxic effects and coenzyme Q10 cannot be overdosed.
